About This Program

New Mexico provides a $2,000 reduction in the taxable value of a primary residence for qualifying heads of family who are New Mexico residents. This exemption reduces property tax liability annually and must be applied for with the county assessor's office. It can be combined with veteran exemptions.

A $2,000 reduction in taxable value saves approximately $40–$80 per year depending on local mill rate. Reduces the base against which taxes are calculated.
