Federal Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit (20%)

NPS / IRS / WA Dept. of Archaeology & Historic Preservation (DAHP)

Active Home Repair

About This Program

The federal Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit provides a 20% income tax credit on qualified expenditures for the certified rehabilitation of National Register-listed historic buildings. In Washington, the credit is administered in partnership with DAHP. Owner-occupied residential properties do not qualify; the building must be income-producing (rental, commercial, hotel, etc.) for at least five years after rehabilitation. Work must conform to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation.

A $200,000 qualifying rehabilitation generates a $40,000 federal income tax credit, effectively reducing project cost by 20%.
