Start with the water supplier on the property’s bill

Ask for the public service-line inventory entry for the address, the material on both the utility and property sides, the current replacement schedule, whether the system has a replacement or cost-assistance program, and what approval is required before private work. If the supplier is unknown, use EPA’s Consumer Confidence Report locator. Coverage, ownership, timing, and household cost vary by water system and must be confirmed before work begins.

Private wells and Tribal systems

A private well may not have a public-water service line. Ask the state drinking-water or health authority for testing guidance instead of assuming a replacement program applies. For a Tribal water system, confirm the system serving the address and use the appropriate Tribal or EPA regional drinking-water contact.
