VA Home Improvement & Structural Alterations (HISA) Grant

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

active federal

About This Program

The VA Home Improvement and Structural Alterations (HISA) grant provides up to $6,800 for veterans with service-connected conditions requiring home modifications and $2,000 for veterans without service-connected conditions. Unlike SAH/SHA, HISA covers smaller accessibility modifications such as roll-in showers, grab bars, ramps, and widened doorways. It is a lifetime benefit and can be used at a rented residence with landlord approval.

HISA is available even if the veteran rents — unlike SAH/SHA which require ownership. Can be combined with SAH/SHA in some cases. Apply through your local VA medical center.
